LIFE AND DEATH: COVID-19 AS A CASE STUDY
It is breathtaking that the world could come to a halt and major countries/cities locked down; that the rich and the poor alike could suffer the same thing and sit at home; that it could no longer be praiseworthy to boast and tell friends that I just came back from Asia, Europe, and America – try it and see how the story ends.
A time when North Korea, America, Russia, Iran, Iraq and the other war mongers could no longer boast of detonating missiles that could bring the world to rust in a minute but now spending billions of dollars to deal with the pandemic – CORONA VIRUS.
It is very ridiculous that the world could fear COVID-19 more than GOD and more ironical that COVID-19 could cause such humility, tension, pressure, solitude, meekness, obedience, proactive and reactive measures, and orderliness in the hearts of men than GOD could. In fact, COVID-19 is a universal religion that has engaged the world in a common course than history has ever hold and the good and the bad alike are now united in the fight against it. What an agent of unity and world peace. Indeed, man is life-oriented and death is his only limitation and the worst enemy. Nobody wants to die.
Just with COVID-19, sex workers had recorded low patronage as customers suddenly lost interest. A rapist is afraid to rape because the victim may be a carrier; hoodlums, arm robbers, kidnappers/abductors and evil men are stilled. All football matches and other games are postponed. Schools, cities, market places, churches are shot down. The rich seem to be affected the more hence the Nigerians' slogan: “COVID-19 is the sickness for the rich.” And they can’t even travel outside the country to receive medical attention whereas; the poor on the other hand are now suffering from HUNGER VIRUS-20 because their means of survival are blocked and if this pandemic persists for long, those who would die of hunger may outworn those who would die of the pandemic knowing too well that the worst form of poverty is the poverty of the uncertainty of the next meal.
It is very evident that the imminent danger and threat COVID-19 and HUNGER VIRUS-20 has and/or would pose to the world especially to underdeveloped countries when the pandemic spreads farther would be unbearable. How do we contain the virus especially in a country like Nigeria where 2/3 of the populace takes serious issues for granted?
1. Cough into your elbow.
2. Wash your hands regularly with soap and running water.
3. Use hand sanitizer regularly.
4. Use face mask and avoid crowd.
5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, mouth, ears and open wounds.
6. If you love me stay away from me for now.
7. Donate money, hand sanitizer, liquid soap and food items. It could go a long way to combat COVID-19 and HUNGER VIRUS-20.
8. Don't spread fear; spread hope and preventive measures.
9. Pray.
